Established in 2012, the Modine Smith Humanitarian Award celebrates individuals who embody the generosity, service, and enduring commitment championed by philanthropist Modine Smith. This award honors those whose dedication strengthens the past, present, and future of cutting.
Shannon Lamb
A lifelong horsewoman, Shannon Lamb grew up riding on her family ranch, developing a deep foundation in horsemanship that led her to the sport of cutting. Horses such as Mr. Three Bucks and Shorty Katz, who carried her to the NCHA Members Hall of Fame, shaped her journey—but Lamb is most known for the way she lifts others.
Her legacy is defined by kindness, mentorship, and a steadfast belief in paying it forward. Lamb has introduced countless riders—especially youth—to cutting by generously sharing her horses, supporting families, and celebrating every rider’s success. She is also a passionate advocate for weekend cutting, championing the grassroots level she believes is essential to the sport’s future.
“I’ve always believed in giving back,” Lamb said. “Support the youth. Help the parents. Share your horses. Keep the weekend strong. That’s how we keep this sport alive.”
Mike Farris
The NCHA also proudly honors the late Michael Don “Mike” Farris, who passed away on September 17, 2024. A devoted father to Reygan Richardson and Riley Hope Farris, Mike was a pillar of the National Youth Cutting Horse Association (NYCHA)—a constant presence at shows, practices, and leadership events.
Farris inspired and mentored countless youth riders, championing sportsmanship, horsemanship, and confidence. He was a loyal supporter of NYCHA fundraisers, educational programs, and leadership initiatives, always working to ensure young cutters had the opportunity to grow both in and out of the arena.
“The NCHA is honored to recognize Shannon Lamb and the late Mike Farris as the 2025 Modine Smith Humanitarian Award recipients,” said Jay Winborn, NCHA Executive Director. “Their generosity, mentorship, and commitment to strengthening our sport reflect the very spirit Modine Smith stood for.”
