FORT WORTH – The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) is excited to announce Paula Wood of Stephenville, Texas, as the 2024 Julie Dvorak Hansma Non-Pro Sportsmanship Award recipient. Wood will be presented with this award during the 2024 NCHA Metallic Cat World Championship Futurity.

The Julie Hansma Non-Pro Sportsmanship Award will be presented annually to an active Non-Pro rider in the NCHA who exemplifies the outstanding qualities of Julie Hansma. These qualities include: a high level of horsemanship both in and out of the show pen, support for peers, serving as a trusted advisor, maintaining a high level of integrity, and demonstrating leadership that embodies the true essence of a Non-Pro rider in the sport of cutting.

Wood has been a member of the NCHA since 1989 and remembers Julie Dvorak Hansma fondly. “Julie was a very, very dear friend of mine. We raised our kids together and showed against each other. I feel very honored to be chosen for this award,” explained Wood. “It’s not just an award,” she went on to explain. “It’s really emotional for me.”

“I grew up with my mom and dad both showing in the NCHA in the Great New Mexico Cutting Horse Association. Then I married Kobie Wood and went to a different level showing. Kobie and I have been married for 33 years, and both our daughters grew up with Julie’s daughters. They have hauled my kids and I’ve hauled their kids all over the United States. I’ve been very blessed,” said Wood.

The Julie Dvorak Hansma Non-Pro Sportsmanship Award is graciously sponsored by Russ and Janet Westfall.

“The NCHA is honored to present this award in Julie’s honor and memory. We would like to congratulate Paula Wood for her accomplishments and for the leadership that she displays,” said Jay Winborn, NCHA Executive Director.
