NCHA ANNOUNCES MARY KINGSBURY SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD RECIPIENT

The National Cutting Horse Association announces the 2023 Mary Kingsbury Sportsmanship Award recipient, Jerry Yelverton.

FORT WORTH – The National Cutting Horse Association announces the 2023 Mary Kingsbury Sportsmanship Award recipient, Jerry Yelverton. The award is presented annually to an active NCHA Amateur dedicated to the sport of cutting, displays good sportsmanship, fairness and high moral character. Yelverton was selected for this award for representing the National Cutting Horse Association with these characteristics and more.

Although Yelverton grew up riding horses and living on a farm, he wasn’t introduced to the sport of cutting horses until he attended the Houston Fat Stockshow. After graduating high school, it was 40 more years until he happened upon the NCHA Eastern Nationals in Jackson, Mississippi where he then searched for a trainer in his area, leading to the start of his cutting career and membership with the NCHA in 2003. Starting off with weekend shows then limited aged events, Yelverton is now competing in his 20^th year.

“Over the past few years, I have made a lot of good friends. That is why I do it; for the friends. I am not deserving of the Mary Kingsbury Sportsmanship Award…I just found something I really enjoyed” said Yelverton. He would like to thank his trainer and friend Craig Thompson for taking care of him and his horses.

“The National Cutting Horse Association is honored to present this esteemed award to Jerry Yelverton at the 2023 NCHA Metallic Cat World Championship Futurity. It is with great pleasure that we honor Mary Kingsbury alongside the sportsmanship and high moral characteristics that so many of our members display” said Jay Winborn, Executive Director of the NCHA.
