The great Some Kinda Memories, aka “Fern”, died on September 18, 2022 surrounded by the Shrontz Family on the Coyote Flats Ranch in Beaumont, Texas.
The 1994 sorrel mare was bred by Shelly Mowery and named for her good friend Fern Sawyer, who was inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Fern was sired by Smart Little Lena and Some Kinda Playgirl. She was later purchased and loved by Dr. Carl and Laurel Shrontz in 1996.
In 1997, Fern, ridden by Mike Mowery, made her mark in the NCHA Open Futurity history by scoring a 226 and breaking the previous record of 225.5 established 17 years before. In addition, she was NCHA Open Classic/Challenge Reserve Champion; Polo Ranch Open Classic Reserve Champion; August Open Classic Co-Reserve Champion; Bonanza Open Derby and Classic Champion and Brazos Bash Open Classic Reserve Champion. She also received the ROM Performance – Youth Award, and $378, 671 in lifetime earnings. As her trainer Mike put it, “she was a strong-willed, little mare, very confident in everything she did.”
She produced foals earning $521,000 including Some Kinda Sweety, My Lil Catillac, Some Kinda Highbrow, Fernturity, Some Kinda Twister, Somekindapurrfect, Somekinda Shiney, Ferntastic all with finalist titles.
