William Alan Patterson, 1943-2018
William Alan Patterson of Westville, South Carolina, died January 20 at his home. He was 74. Patterson attended the Augusta Futurity the week he passed away and enjoyed visiting with his cutting friends. A former trainer and NCHA judge, Patterson’s membership with the National Cutting Horse Association dates back to 1969.
A memorial service to remember Patterson will be held at 2 p.m., January 31, in the sanctuary of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church in Liberty Hill, South Carolina, where Patterson was a member. Rev. Dorothy Killian and Rev. Dave Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following in Bettie Richards Hall at the church.
Born October 8, 1943, in Asheboro, North Carolina, Patterson was a son of the late William Clyde and Goldie Lee Allen Patterson. He owned a horse farm for many years and won the 1985 World Championship in the $3,000 Novice with Docs Toquita Doll. Patterson was also involved with the High School Rodeo Association and served as a mentor and judge at high school cutting events in the area.
Patterson suffered a stroke many years ago, which confined him to a wheelchair, but his friends remember his positive outlook.
“He had a 100 percent optimistic view on life,” said his friend, Judy Boozer. “When he talked to you, he would make you smile as he would say, ‘Today’s a good day – it’s a real good day.’ He had an excellent attitude, and good Lord, he loved cutting more than anybody that I know. He was so proud to be at any event, but he loved the Augusta Futurity and he got to go again this year. Before his stroke, he was always in the pen helping anybody. Everybody loved him, and he really enjoyed being a part of the kids’ cuttings.”
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Sylvia Ann Orr Patterson; his son, Scott Tyler “Ty” (Kari Voyles) Patterson; his grandson, Gaven Patterson; and his granddaughter, Kaci Davis-Patterson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margo Toni Patterson.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice.
