Madalyn Colgrove, Boligee, Ala., scored 219 points on Sweet Baby Marie, Thursday, August 3, to top the second and final day of the NCHA Derby Non-Pro second go round. She also tied with Elizabeth Quirk and Holmeboy, from Wednesday’s sets, for the second go-round win.

Meanwhile,Ty Moore, Madill, Okla., riding One Good Lookin Babe LTE $34,820, by Rockin W, and Armando Costa Neto, Weatherford, Tex., on Arosesuchaboon LTE $7,250, by Peptoboonsmal, tied with 435 points, the high cumulative score from the first and second go-rounds. Costa also earned a cumulative of 433 points aboard Watch Me Nae Nae, by Playgun, while Moore earned 429.5 points on Smooth XTC, by Smooth As A Cat.sweet-baby-marie-madalyn-colgrove

Forty-seven riders with 427 points and above advanced to the Non-Pro Semi-Finals to be held on Friday, August 4, including Madalyn Colgrove with 434.5 points on Sweet Baby Marie, by High Brow CD, and Elizabeth Quirk with 433 points on Holmeboy, by Metallic Cat. Paula Wood, Stephenville, Tex., also earned a cumulative score of 434.5 points, the second-highest from the second go-round, riding Suen Too Be Black, by Boon Too Suen.

Madalyn Colgrove and Sweet Baby Marie LTE $97,542 made their mark earlier this year as reserve champions of the Breeders Invitational Non-Pro, while Madalyn’s grandfather, Joel Colgrove, rode the mare as an Unlimited Amateur finalist in the Ike Hamilton Futurity. Matt Miller showed then 3-year-old Sweet Baby Marie to win Open championships in the 2016 West Texas Futurity, the 2016 Southern Futurity and the 2016 Idaho Futurity and has continued to show her as a finalist in four 4-year-old events.

Madalyn, the NCHA earner of $424,760, won the 2014 NCHA Classic Challenge 5/6 Amateur, when she was 14, riding Hes A Heapinspoonful, the horse she also showed as champion of the 2014 Breeders Invitational 5/6 Amateur, and the 2014 Cotton Stakes 5/6 Amateur and Unlimited Amateur divisions. Madalyn also won the 2016 Breeders Invitational 5/6 Unlimited Amateur on One Catty Cupid.

In addition to Sweet Baby Marie, Madalyn qualified for the 2017 NCHA Derby Non-Pro Finals with Tank Tallic LTE $21,771, by Metallic Cat, and Peptos Turn To Dual LTE $27,488, by Dual Rey.

Ray Baldwin, Fort Worth, Tex., earned 218 points, the second-highest score from the second go-round, riding Cherry Chex Cat LTE $34,501, by Cats Merada. Baldwin, an NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame member and earner of $661,482, won the 2015 NCHA Classic Challenge 5/6 Non-Pro riding Dont Look Now, and most recently placed fifth with Cherry Chex Cat in the 2017 Breeders Invitational Non-Pro, and as a finalist in the Augusta Futurity Non-Pro.
